Lau Gar Kuen is one of the five ancestor styles of Southern Kung Fu. Purportedly founded by Lau Sam-Ngan, or "Three-Eyed Lau", Lau Gar Kuen has its origins in the Guangxi province of China and is fairly typical of such styles in its employment of five animal styles, as well as in the stances and strikes common in Southern styles of Kung Fu. In the UK, Lau Gar's keeper is Master Jeremy Yau.

Characteristics of the Style

The varying styles of Kung Fu are classified on several different dichotomies: Internal and External, Northern and Southern, Hard and Soft, Long and Short. Lau Gar is an external style in that it focuses on physical training and cultivates the body through conditioning exercises and striking practices. It is also a hard style, with a greater emphasis placed on forceful striking, with the aim of causing external damage and broken bones (though it does have elements of so-called soft styles).

Long and short styles are characterised by the degree of extension and the length of movements in the style. Lau Gar tends to favour close-in blows and a tight stance with short movements, making it a short style. It is also a Southern style, a distinction based not only geography, but also on the nature of the movements and techniques employed: northern styles tend to emphasise acrobatic movements and highly mobile approaches to combat. Southern styles, on the other hand, tend to operate from a stable base with short strikes and low stances.
