But the flexibility to access sites like the BBC, Facebook and YouTube while on the go, or check emails, usually requires a fast connection speed. Wi-fi is one option but, outside of the home, the ability to connect to a wi-fi network is still not widespread in many areas.

3G, HSPA and HSPA+ Mobile Phones

Mobile phones featuring 3G and, more recently, 3G+ (also known as HSPA) currently provide the fastest wireless connection speeds for most people and examples include the Apple iPhone and HTC Desire. 3G and HSPA is common for smartphones. A peak performance of 14.4 mbps is possible but actual speeds for the majority of users is usually significantly lower and usually more like 3.6 mbps or 7.2 mbps at most.
