New York State offers a wide variety of popular attractions for visitors and residents alike. With millions of tourists coming to the state each year, the region focuses its efforts in offering activities and events geared towards all types of travelers, from families to the individual. Among some of the most popular attractions in New York State are a 18th century military fort, one of the country's preeminent national forests and a string of historic sites just north of New York City. Each of these attractions offers a different experience that can be enjoyed as simply part of a vacation or encompass a detailed visit that can take days or weeks.

Old Fort Niagara

Situated on the bluffs overlooking Lake Ontario near Niagara Falls is Old Fort Niagara, one of the most popular attractions in New York State. Built at the entrance to the Niagara River in 1726, Old Fort Niagara played a pivotal role in the French and Indian Wars between Great Britain and France as well as the American War for Independence. The site helped establish the Great Lakes as an important region and presented a dramatic and permanent stand against the native Iroquois people.

Welcoming over 100,000 visitors from the New York area and around the world each year, Old Fort Niagara is now a National Historic Landmark with some of the oldest buildings of the region. Travelers can experience reenactments, exhibits and a vast collection of artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries. Old Fort Niagara is open all year long from 9AM to 5PM daily, except in July and August when hours are extended to 7PM. The attraction is closed on New Years Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. As of 2010, admission to the facility is $10.00 for adults and $6.00 for children 6 to 12. Seniors and New York State Parks Master Pass holders receive a dollar discount. Children under 6 are free.
