When I was a child I used to watch Star Trek and marvel at how Captain Kirk could unclip his communicator from his belt and speak to the star ship Enterprise. How small it was and how quick. Imagine if you could own such a device.
Thirty five years later I can confidently look at his clam shell two way radio and laugh. Could it send texts? No. Could it take photo's, record audio or video? No. Did it have an alarm clock or an app to tell him where the nearest burger joint was? No and no. In short it was rubbish compared to even the most basic mobile phone in the twenty first century.
The mobile phone has, it is safe to say, revolutionised society. Ten years ago, the idea of me owning one was way down the list of priorities whereas today I almost never leave home without it. The biggest developments always seem to be ones that nobody predicts so for me to talk about the future of the mobile phone might seem ridiculous. Who knew that texting would become more popular than talking to people? After all, people phone because it is easier than writing.
