More than forty years before Jamestown Virginia, and twenty-five years before the English settled in Roanoke Virginia, the Spanish settled St. Augustine Florida in 1565. They were led by a Spanish Admiral by the name of Pedro Menendez de Aviles. To this day, many of the original structures, and indeed the original city, still stand.
