The Green Mobility Network (GMN), based in Miami, promotes walking and biking as an alternative to driving in traffic-clogged Miami. But even though the physical benefits of biking are well-known, it is a hard sell in a city which ranks Number One year after year in fatalities of pedestrians and bikers. Even so, Tom Blazejack, one of the founders of GMN, keeps trying and is confident the group is making progress.

"You can lift your spirits with the release of endorphins, and give you a real connection to your community and with other bikers," says Blazejack to an audience of mostly high school students attending a local environmental conference. Combined with physical fitness and saving carbon emissions from driving, there are certainly compelling reasons to leave the car at home and get on a bicycle to do local errands or have a pleasure ride around your neighborhood. But Florida ranks Number One in bicycling fatalities, Miami being among the top four cities in the country for fatalities for both bikers and pedestrians.

Biking Saves Time In a Congested City

Blazejack made a cogent argument that biking actually saves time in a busy schedule. The extra time spent biking to get places is a time saver. No hassling to find a parking spot and quarters to plug the meter. And no need to squeeze an hour out of the busy day to go to the gym since you've already had your workout.
