By all accounts, fruit beers are difficult to pull off. As a brewer, It is outstandingly difficult to capture the essence of the fruit while maintaining a balanced and full-bodied beer; that one element does not over-power the other is crucial. That being said, there are some brewers who do it very well.

Some personal favorites (remember that lambics are in a different category altogether):

  • Magic Hat's Number 9
  • Atlantic Brewing Company's Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale
  • Kuhnhenn Brewing Company's Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock
  • Wolaver's Wit Bier
  • Abita's Purple Haze

Rating Fruit Beer (Blackberry Beer): BJCP Styles

All beer styles have specific characteristics for flavor and taste. When rating fruit beer (blackberry beer), bear the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) style guidelines in mind along with an image of what the "perfect" beer of a particular style tastes like or might taste like.

Any beer should be rated in comparison to this "perfect" image. Of course, any judge will tell you this can be a somewhat subjective method of rating beer. So, the idea of reviewing, comparing, and rating beer often comes down to personal taste within beer style guidelines.
